Wasps v Toulouse at Ricoh Arena Coventry

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

On Saturday we headed back to my hometown, Coventry, to watch Wasps rugby team in their Heineken Champions Cup match against Toulouse at the Ricoh Arena. We were invited to review our experience and I was so excited to take Zach along to his first proper Rugby match seems as he has been telling everyone that he will be a Rugby player when he is older for the past two years.

We started off visiting the clubhouse. The clubhouse is a members only bar onsite and features an array of Wasps memorabilia from the clubs 150 year history. It boasts 20 large screen TV's, a real ale bar and comfortable lounge seating. They also host pre and post-match Q&A's with members of the Wasps squad. I have to say, after being so excited for this experience, we weren't too impressed. The bar service was really poor and we waited almost half an hour to be served, as did many other unhappy customers, completely missing the pre-match Q&A that was going on the other side of the bar. The clubhouse was extremely crowded so there was no available seating and not much room to stand.  It is a great idea but was sadly let down by the bar service.

Once we got out of the Clubhouse we went back outside to make our way to our seats. We had seats in the south stand with a great view of the pitch. The atmosphere was great and it was nice to see the teams' fans mixed together in the stands. I spent most of my younger life attending football matches so I was so shocked to see this! The teams entrance to the pitch was pretty impressive, the kids loved watching the fire cannons and the giant flags moving around the pitch. It was a great start.

The game was an exciting one and we were constantly on edge. It was a close game, it was very back and forth between the two teams, with Wasps leading at half-time, but the second half saw Toulouse pull away and secure victory. Toulouse had the better defence and therefore took the game. It will be interesting to see who wins this weekend as they are playing each other again in France.

The food and drink outlets in the arena were great. I took the kids down a couple of minutes before half-time where we bought some amazing steak pies and drinks. They had sold out of lots of food choices but we were served quickly and the food was really tasty.

We really enjoyed ourselves. It was cold and we were soaked from the rain outside but it didn't dampen our spirits, we loved watching the game and would definitely go again. The game did however persuade Zach not to pursue a career in Rugby as 'it is too rough'. He is happy to just watch in future!

*We were given free tickets to the game in return for a write up. All opinions are my own.
