Review: Botley The Coding Robot

Monday, December 10, 2018

Botley is a next generation robot perfect for introducing coding skills to children without the need for screens. My kids were so excited to try out Botley. On first impressions he is a cute little robot with big friendly eyes, you can see why he appeals to kids. He comes with a 77 piece activity kit so there is plenty to get on with.

What is in the box?

  • Botley the Coding Robot
  • Remote programmer
  • Detachable robot arms
  • 40 coding cards
  • 6 double-sided tiles
  • 27 obstacle building pieces
  • Starter guide with coding challenges

There is so much you can do with Botley and the activity guide will teach you step by step how to use him including teaching you how to use loops to repeat a sequence of steps, how to get Botley to detect objects that are in his path and how to get him to move objects using the removable arms. There are also lots of coding challenge examples so your child can go through trying them one at a time to advance their coding skills.

My children have no real experience with coding so I thought it would be interesting to see how they get on with Botley and decided to give them as little help as possible so they could try and figure things out for themselves. I was so surprised at how well they all picked it up. They are now all experts at sequences, loops, moving obstacles and getting Botley to follow lines and detect objects. They will be ready to take on the coding challenges in no time and just need to practice larger sequences and deciding what sequence they need to do to get him to end in a specific place. I love how much it gets their brains working and has them working together to achieve whatever their goal is.

They loved the section in the starter guide which gives you codes to make him to say 'hi' and get dizzy when spinning amongst other things. There are just so many possibilities with Botley and he will keep children entertained for hours.
